ACL & AFC Cup Quarter-finals Draw

Posted by the phenomenon

Luis Felipe Scolari will see his new club Bunyodkor take on Pohang Steelers in the quarters of the ACL.

The former Brazil, Portugal and Chelsea boss recently signed an 18-month contract to take charge of the big-spending Uzbek side and faces a tough baptism against the Koreans as the 60-year-old looks to take Bunyodkor one better than last season's semi-final appearance.

Pohang produced a breathtaking display of football in their 6-0 drubbing of Newcastle Jets in the last 16 but will not relish facing a side containing the likes of Rivaldo and Chilean marksman Jose Luis Villanueva that defeated Piroozi at the intimidating Azardi Stadium in Tehran.

Kawasaki Frontale again face Japanese opposition in the form of Nagoya Grampus. Having knocked out defending champions Gamba Osaka in the last round, they come up against fellow J.League side Nagoya who ousted Suwon Bluewings.

FC Seoul, who stunned J.League leaders Kashima Antlers in the last 16, were rewarded with a tie against Qatar minnows Umm Salal while the second side from Uzbekistan in the last eight, Pakhtakor, were drawn against Saudi Arabian giants Al Ittihad.

"We are pleased to be playing Umm Salal," FC Seoul team official Kim Tae-joo told the AFC's official website.

"We beat Kashima Antlers to get to the quarter-finals so we are very confident that we have the ability to go on to win the tournament."

Meanwhile in the AFC Cup, Chonburi were drawn against Binh Duong in what looks to be the most mouthwatering of the four quarter-final ties.

Thai side Chonburi outclassed Indonesians PSMS Medan 4-0 in the last 16 while Binh Duong thrashed Malaysian outfit Kedah 8-2 and with both teams finding the back of the net with regularity during the group stages, a feast of attacking football could be in the offing.

"We know their style of play and I think both the teams are of the same level. Our target is to reach the AFC Cup final and win it," said Binh Duong's Technical Director Nguyen Van Hiep.

Elsewhere, Syrian heavyweights Al Karama were handed a tough draw when they take on Al Arabi from Kuwait while Hong Kong's South China, who cruised past Home United in the last 16, will face a much stiffer test in the shape of Uzbek side Neftchi.

Kuwait SC face Arbil in the other last eight clash with the two legs to be played on September 15 and 30.
